Are you concerned about global warming? How much?
After watching "An Inconvenient Truth" a documentary on global warming by Al Gore. I am really concerned about life on earth after 50 years from now! This movie documents everything you need to know about global warming. You should also watch this too..
Here's few glaciers that melted so fast within years...
Population History of the world: Can you see the increasing demand of everything!???
World Temperature history: Gosh! Imagine this heat after 20 years.. at least!
A Blue dot :
That blue dot in the circle is Earth seen from 4 billion miles away, photo by Voyager 1, 1990. This dot is what we call home! is there anything we can do to save it?
Here's few youtube video on documentary movie:

Re: Are you concerned about global warming? How much?
yep,This term Global Warming scares me,. and i feel it everytime i go out in the sun. anxiety, chaos, hyperness among people,eh!! i truely believe that instead of all those overhype communialization and violance, politicians should focus their attention towards touchy subject like this, and try to create more public awareness n do something about it. As individuals also we can help by planting more trees, checking on emission..,participate on awareness programs n stuffs lik dat.

Re: Are you concerned about global warming? How much?
That only three people (and that includes me) bothered to reply to this thread -- doesn't that answer your question, daddy? Everyone says there should be more awareness, we should plant more trees, the developed countries should do something since they are the major contributors to global warming. I say that's a truckload of bull!
In Sikkim, being environmentally conscious means planting a few saplings on some specific days and then forgetting all about it for the rest of the year. The government is happy, people are happy, everyone happy, apart from the saplings that were planted with much fanfare on the World Environment Day and are now wilting coz nobody had the time or the commonsense to remember that plants need to be watered! Agreed trees suck in carbon dioxide and the usual blah blah blah. But what people fail to understand is when trees are left uncared for, they die. And when they die, they release carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere. So we're back to square one. This is the kind of information that should be shared with the people, not slogans like "Plant a tree. Make Sikkim green".
Another good away to shirk from our responsibility is to claim we are not responsible. Yeah right! That’s like saying we don’t burn fuel, we don’t cut down trees for paper, we don’t use plastic (banning polythene bags does not make us a plastic-free state), we don’t use electricity, we don’t eat… Yes, when we switch on the lights, we contribute to global warming. When we watch TV or use our PC or printer, we contribute to global warming. When we use our fridge, we contribute to global warming. When we use tap water, we contribute to global warming. When we drive our car or hire a taxi, we contribute to global warming. When we buy imported goods (importing involves transportation and transportation involves using fuel), we contribute to global warming. I guess I got my point across.
Yes, I agree we cannot stop using electronic appliances/cars and go back to the dark ages and we certainly cannot do without electricity and water. But there is something we can do. We can be a little bit more conscious and adopt energy/resource efficient practices. It’s really simple. Switch off the lights when you are not in your room. Switch off your computer monitor when you know you’ll be away for your desk for a while. Don’t keep the water running while brushing your teeth. Don’t keep your car idling for too long. Opt not to get a receipt from your ATM and save a little paper. Simple things which, if done collectively, can make a huge difference.
And most importantly, we should stop saying it’s not our problem. Whether or not we helped create this mess, the impact will be felt by all of us, no matter where we live. And the ‘inconvenient truth’ is those to be worst hit by the effects of global warming are the ones living in the less developed parts of the globe. So don’t you think that makes it our problem?

Re: Are you concerned about global warming? How much?
certainly yes... I agree with you, but I don't blame other members for not replying this thread. If you are from state sikkim, you'll find that global warming consciousness is in initial state, people don't really know about it, even the government officials, higher educated people in sikkim are just not aware of bigger issues of global warming and how to tackle with it. Even myself, only after watching this documentary movie came to realize about the real effects of global warming, which is of course happening sooner than we think.
I just thank you for taking part whoever you are, May be this site is too small to begin but we would love to have you take steps in educating us more..
and welcome to sikkimonline.info

Isn't that a sorry state of affairs?
Here's a site that has some good tips on how to reduce C02 emissions - http://www.cutco2.org/what-can-i-do.php
I hope sikkimonline.info regulars will find it useful.
And thanks for the welcome

Re: Are you concerned about global warming? How much?
Point noted, Salom. I should have replied long time ago.
We usually wait for the government to act upon calamities such as global warming. What we dont realize is that its our own responsibility as an individual to pitch in to the cause. How can one help?
1. Recycle paper. Use the back side of the sheet instead of discarding it. You will be saving trees that are felled for making paper.
2. Avoid taking print outs. If you're in an office where internet is available, send emails instead. 'Paper-less' offices in developed countries help fight global warming. We can implement the same thing here too as much as possible.
3. Replace ordinary high wattage bulbs with CFL tubes. Normal bulbs consume 60 watts to 100 watts of power. CFLs use only 15 watts, ergo they are more economical.
4. Do not keep your mobile charger on even if you are not charging your phone. This consumes electricity. Disconnect the charger when not in use.
5. Use a power strip at home. The one which you can switch off when you leave the house. Which will automatically switch off all appliances/lights. Save energy.
I remember my friend's father talking about how a few decades back one could wear a sweater throughout the year in Gangtok. Its a different story now. Which could get progressively worse in the coming decades.
People say - Save the world for our children. I say, lets save the world for a better tomorrow for OURSELVES. Because, if not you, who else will?

Re: Are you concerned about global warming? How much?
I couldn't agree with you more, Rinchen. It's high time we realise our responsibility towards our planet. Hey, why don't we all pitch in to share whatever we know about reducing our carbon footprint?
Here's my TIP OF THE DAY
The average laptop consumes as much as 85% less energy than desktops.
Even on idle mode, laptops are more energy-efficient than desktops:
even the most energy-efficient idling desktop uses 10 times more power than the best idling laptop and the worst laptop is twice as energy-efficient on idle mode as the best desktop!
So if you switch to laptop, apart from cutting down on carbon emission, you also end up saving on your electricity bill.
Here are some energy saving tips for both desktop and laptop users:- Switch off your desktop/laptop when you are not using it. Since the lifetime of electrical appliances are commonly measured in hour of active use, powering down could lengthen your machine’s life
- Turn the monitor off whenever you get up. The monitor alone can use about two-thirds of the energy required to power the computer
- Run your laptop off the mains rather than the battery if you can, to minimise energy loss through battery charging and discharging
- And please, don’t be in a hurry to upgrade to the latest machine with a faster processor. Increasing processor speeds tend to increase electricity consumption

Re: Are you concerned about global warming? How much?
I wanted a perfect ending. Now I've learned, the hard way, that some poems don't rhyme, and some stories don't have a clear beginning, middle, and end. Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what's going to happen next. Delicious ambiguity.
