Mission

Taktse International School
Taktse International School

The idea of Taktse International School was conceived in the winter of 2004 when a group of concerned Sikkimese gathered to discuss the problems confronting our society: the erosion of traditional values, the increasing number of alienated youth with little or no marketable skills, the growth of mass consumerism, the growing disparity in wealth, the degradation of environmental resources, and the impoverishment of ethical standards in public offices. Rapid development and the failure of the greater society to wisely manage the inevitable forces of change have exacerbated these problems over the years.

These challenges are particularly common in developing countries that are experiencing rapid modernization. Therefore, they wanted to create model school and community capable of producing the compassionate and ethical leaders that developing societies so desperately need.

Curriculum

  • Write and Speak (W&S): Write and Speak program is designed to give students more exposure to creative writing, sight reading and public speaking (with Emotion!). They are encouraged to write poems, letters, note cards, stories, skits, etc. and then present them to the class. The emphasis for this class is expression and confidence!
  • Pods: Pods are inter-grade (and inter-generation) groups that act as small family units within the school. Pods work on projects that build self-esteem, teamwork and communication skills. Individual members look out for their pod mates’ welfare, both academically and socially. Each pod has Pod Leader from the upper grades and a Teacher adviser who work together to make the pod time activities a success!
  • Computer Science: All grades have Computer Science three times a week (except KG which has it twice). Each grade concentrates on typing skills and once certain speeds and accuracies are achieved, students are rewarded with a multitude of exciting educational games and programs to increase their computer literacy. Students have designed blogs, and have developed confidence in a wide variety of computer software. This program has already yielded astonishing results. TIS is committed to providing as much "hands-on" computer time as possible to students at all levels

  • Library: Library program is designed to cultivate a student’s love of reading and develop the skills necessary to be effective researchers (using a dictionary, thesaurus, encyclopedia, google, etc.). Students are rewarded when they read a book and complete a book report. For the younger grades, our library classes focus on inspiring students to decode words and understand the elements of a story. Most of our books come from the USA and UK and are invaluable learning tools.

  • Math and English Activities (M&E): This class is designed to give students a different perspective on English and Math. Each grade plays interactive, educational games that expose them to the importance of English and Math skills. Math and English activities have included Math Olympics, Spelling Bees, Scrabble and dictionary competitions and simulating running a small business.

  • Language Classes: Although TIS is strictly an English medium school, our educational approach emphasizes the goal of fluency in several other languages. Currently we offer Hindi and Chinese. We plan to expand this program to include Chinese, Dzongka, and a Western European languages by 2007. We are flexible and will communicate with parents about how each language offers students access to incredible worlds and cultures.

  • Environmental Science: EVS program is based on the curriculum created by Wendy Pulger and our Founding Friend, Jim Ratcliffe. This curriculum is specifically designed for Sikkim and it’s environment and concentrates on a hands-on experiential knowledge of the world. Projects range from composting, to building butterfly gardens to investigating the incredible diversity of insects found on our campus.
