General Informations

East Sikkim was part of the kingdom of Sikkim for most of its history. In the 19th century, the district was under the rule of the Bhutanese. After the Anglo Bhutan war, the territory was virtually under the command of the British forces. After India's independence in 1947, the area was part of the kingdom of Sikkim under the protection of India. During the Sino-Indian War of 1962, the Nathula Pass witnessed a few skirmishes between India and China. In 1975, the Sikkim formally became part of the Indian Union as India's 22nd state. People in East Sikkim are mostly of Nepali ethnicity, arriving in search of jobs after the British appropriated the state in the 19th century. Other ethnicities include the Bhutias, the Tibetans and the Lepchas. Nepali is the predominant language in the region.

Military wise, the district is a very sensitive area with the Indian army having control over most areas east of Gangtok and near its borders with People's Republic of China and Bhutan. Visitors to this region are restricted and just a few areas are open to tourists in the areas east of Gangtok. Popular tourist locales are the Tsongmo Lake, Baba Mandir and the Nathula Pass. The Nathula Pass formed the offshoot of the ancient Silk Route which connected Lhasa to India. The pass and the famous Baba Mandir are open to Indian nationals only. To enter this region a special pass — The Inner Line Permit has to be obtained one day prior to departure. This pass is made through local tourist offices. Other tourist areas include Gangtok and the famous Phodong Monastery north of Gangtok and the internationally famous Rumtek Monastery.

Sikkim is one of the 26 biodivesity hot sopts, a veritable treasure house of some of the world's most beautiful streams, lakes and waterfalls. The state has rich flora & funna despite having only 0.22% land of the country.

Permits/Entry Formalitie

Foreigners must obtain Inner Line Permit (ILP) to visit Sikkim. There can be obtained from all Indian Missions, Sikkim Tourism Offices at New Delhi, Kolkatta, Siliguri and Rangpo on the strength of an Indian Visa. The 15 days duration Permit is issued on the spot without any delay provided photocopies of the passport and visa details along with two pass port photos of the applicants are made available. The permissible duration of the stay by the foreign tourist is 15 days initially. The State Government is authorized to extend the same twice by the further period of 30 days. The extension of the permits can be obtained from FRO at Gangtok and Superintendent of Police of the North, West and South Districts.

For those interested in going for trekking in the interior region of the state, the Department of Tourism issues Protected Area Permit (PAP) at Gangtok which is available for certain specified area for groups consisting of two or more foreigners subjects to the condition that the trekking programs can be arranged through a registered travel agency.

Transports/ Communications

Nearest airport for Sikkim is Bagdogra in North Bengal which is 124 kms and approximately 4 hrs drive form Gangtok. There are Indian Airlines, Jet Airways, Deccan Airways, etc. services operating from Bagdogra linking Calcutta, Guwahati and New Delhi. Sikkim Tourism operates daily a five - seater helicopter services between Gangtok and Bagdogra connecting all civil flights.

Rail

The two closest railway stations are Siliguri 141 kms and New Jalpaiguri 125 kms connecting Kolkatta, Delhi, Guwahati, Lucknow, Patna, Ranchi, Bhubaneshwar, Hyderabad, Banglore, Chennai and other important cities of India..

Road

Gangtok is connected by all weather roads with Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Siliguri and also all District Headquarters. The Sikkim Nationalised Transport (SNT) plies regular bus service from Gangtok to all major cities and town in North Bengal and with the state.

Places of Interest in Gangtok (East Sikkim)

Institute of Tibetology, Do-durl stupa, Enchey Monastery, Handicraft Institute, Rumtek Monastery, Zumrang Lingdum Monastery, Ban Jhankri Water falls, and evening walk around the M.G.Market. For long drive, one can go up to Nathula pass, Tibet border and on the way visit Baba Mandir and Tsomgo Lake.

North Sikkim

Its a good news for all the traveller's:

Indian traveller they can go up to Gugudongmar, Lachen, Lachung, Yumthang and Yumesamedong. Foreigner traveller they can go up to Lachen, Thangu, Chopta valley, Lachung and Yumthang.
