Fambong lho

Fambong Lhu wildlife sanctuary is located at a distance of 25km from Gangtok town, the capital of Sikkim. The famous Rumtek Monastery is located at the southeastern boundary. The snowy ranges of Kanchendzonga are clearly visible from Golitar the buffer area of the sanctuary towards northwest. Elevation starts from 1524 m and the highest peak Tinjurey, a triangular hiltop is at 2749m. The ridges further connect Fambong Lho peak and Rogorathai peak. There are bridle paths constructed along the ridges up to Rumted peak.

The main vegetation is Oak Quercus sp., 'Katus' Canstanopsis sp., 'Champ' Michelia sp., ' Kawlo' Machilus sp., ' Kimbu' Morus sp., thicket bamboo forests, ferns and a lone fir Tsuga dumosa at Tinjurey.

In the lower reaches of the sanctuary there are tree ferns Cyathea sp. Rhododendron arboreum interspersed with 'Angeri' Lyanio ovalifolia is seen gregariously on high hills and saddles. The sanctuary is also home to a large number of wild orchids, mosses and lycopodium sp.

  • Accommodation: One log-house with two rooms each at Golitar and Tumin.
  • Permission needed from : Chief Wildlife Warden, Govt. of Sikkim or D.F.O (Wildlife) Forest Secretariat, Deorali, Gangtok - 737102.
  • All types of tourists, including foreigners are allowed to regulated permit from the Chief Wildlife Warden, Government of Sikkim or Divisional Forest Officer (Wildlife)
  1. Be suer to carry your permit from D.F.)(WL) Forest Secretariat, Deorali, Gangtok and take an assistant.. Wildlife warden or Wildlife guard to guide you in the sanctuary.
  2. Silence and discipline are the two main requirements for the visit to a wildlife sanctuary both for successful sightings and personal safety. Children must be well prepared for both. Keep eyes and ear open but mouth closed.
  3. Encountering wildlife in a sanctuary is exciting but not a matter of routing. Be patient.
  4. Small group have more chances of wildlife sighting.
  5. Early Morning and late afternoon are rewarding times in most jungles. You most protect yourself against rain and cold.
  6. Avoid bright colored cloths. Use colors, use colors which will camouflage you in the jungle. Avoid using perfumes.
  7. Avoid using transistors and radios which will disturb the peace and tranquility. Even in the log-house play them at low volume.
  8. Carry sufficient drinking water, tea and snacks, but throwing half-eaten food or wastes such as empty tin and plastic bags, bottles and batteries would be harmful to the jungle inhabitants.
