Sri Sri Sri Sri Sri Maharaja Sir Thutob Namgyal [mThu-stobs rNam-rgyal], Maharaja of Sikkim, KCIE (12.12.1911). b. 1860, fifth son of H.H. Sri Sri Sri Sri Sri Maharaja Tsugphud Namgyal [gTsug-phud rNam-rgyal], Maharaja of Sikkim, by his fifth wife, H.H. Sri Sri Sri Sri Sri Maharani Menchi, educ. privately. Succeeded on the death of his half brother, April 1874. Crowned at Chumbi, Tibet. The Tibetans invaded Sikkim in 1886 and constructed a fort at Lingtu, but a British expeditionary force expelled them in September 1888. The Tibet Sikkim Convention of 17th March 1890, finally fixed the border between the two countries. A British resident was appointed to Sikkim in 1889, but unable to maintain good relations with the Maharaja, the ruler fled to Tibet in 1892. Exiled from Sikkim to British India 1893-1895. Returned to Sikkim as undisputed ruler in 1895, and removed his capital from Tumlong to Gangtok. He provided a labour corps, interpreters and guides to the Younghusband Tibet Mission in 1903-1904. Granted a hereditary salute of 15-guns. Joint author of "Bras-ljongs rgyal-rabs, or History of the Kingdom of Sikkim" (1908). m. (first) at Chumbi, Tibet, 1874, H.H. Sri Sri Sri Sri Sri Maharani Pending (d. 1880), widow of his half-brother H.H. Sri Sri Sri Sri Sri Maharaja Sidkeong Namgyal. m. (second) at Lhasa, Tibet, 1883, H.H. Sri Sri Sri Sri Sri Maharani Yeshay Dolma (joint wife with Thinley Namgyal, Lhase Kusho, grandson of H.H. Sri Sri Sri Sri Sri Maharaja Tsungphud Namgyal - see above, she d. 1912), exiled to British India with her husband 1893-1895, joint author of "Bras-ljongs rgyal-rabs, or History of the Kingdom of Sikkim" (1908), elder daughter of Shafe Uthok, a member of the Lhading House of Lhasa. m. (third) at the Royal Chapel, Tsuk-La-Khang Monastery, Gangtok, 29th August 1912, H.H. Sri Sri Sri Sri Sri Maharani Kesang La (d.s.p. in Tibet, after 1919), the sister of H.H. Sri Sri Sri Sri Sri Maharani Yeshay Dolma, and younger daughter of Shafe Uthok, a member of the Lhading House of Lhasa. He d. at the Royal Palace, Park Ridge, Gangtok, 11th February 1914, having had issue, four sons and three daughters:
  • 1) Prince (Gyalsey) Tsodak Namgyal. b. before 1877 (s/o Rani Pending), educ. privately. Banned from entering Sikkim 21st February 1899 and removed from the succession, by the British authorities, for refusing to leave Tibetan territory and reside permanently within Sikkim. He d. after 1908.
  • 2) Raja Tshotra Namgyal, Tharing Rimpoche (s/o Pending). b. 1878, educ. privately. Settled in Tibet. Granted the personal title of Raja, by the King-Emperor George V, 2nd January 1922. He d. after 1940, having had issue, a son:
    • a) Prince (Gyalsey) Jigme Namgyal [Sey Kusho], educ. St Paul's Sch., Darjeeling.
  • 3) Sri Sri Sri Sri Sri Maharajkumar Sidkeong Tulku Namgyal, who succeeded as H.H. Sri Sri Sri Sri Sri Maharaja Sidkeong Tulku Namgyal [Srid-skyong Sprul-sku rNam-gyal], Maharaja of Sikkim (s/o Pending) - see below.
  • 4) Prince (Gyalsey) Tashi Namgyal, who succeeded as H.H. Sri Sri Sri Sri Sri Maharaja Tashi Namgyal [bKra-shis rNam-gyal]], Maharaja of Sikkim (s/o Yeshay Dolma) - see below.
  • 1) Princess (Semla) Namgyal Dolma. b. 1876 (d/o Pending). She d. in Tibet, 1901.
  • 2) Princess (Semla) Kunzang Wang-mo. b. 1889 (d/o Yeshay Dolma). She d. 1914.
  • 3) Princess (Semla) Chuni Wang-mo [Rani Chuni Wangmo Dorji]. b. at Gangtok, 1896 (d/o Yeshay Dolma), educ. privately. Presdt. Sikkim Education Board. m. at Kalimpong, 1st April 1918, Raja Sonam Tobgay Dorji, CIE (8.6.1944) (b. 1896; d. September 1953), sometime Agent for Foreign Relations for the King of Bhutan, Royal Chamberlain and Governor of Ha, son of Ugyen Dorji, Gongzim. She d. 1994, having had issue, three sons and two daughters - see Bhutan.

Succeeded on the death of his father 10th February 1914. Consecrated at the Royal Chapel, Tsuk-La-Khang Monastery, Gangtok, 29th April 1914. Hon. Lieut. Northern Bengal Mounted Rifles (Volunteers), 1913. Learned in Chinese, English, Hindi, Lepcha, Nepali and Tibetan. Rcvd: Delhi Durbar medals (1903 and 1911). Sri Sri Sri Sri Sri Maharaja Sir Thutob Namgyal [mThu-stobs rNam-rgyal], Maharaja of Sikkim, KCIE, by his third wife, H.H. Sri Sri Sri Sri Sri Maharani Yeshay Dolma, educ. St Paul's Sch., Darjeeling, and Mayo Coll., Ajmer. Succeeded on the death of his half brother, 5th December 1914. Installed at the Royal Palace, Park Ridge, Gangtok, 19th February 1915. Consecrated at the Royal Chapel, Tsuk-La-Khang Monastery, Gangtok, 15th May 1916. Invested with full ruling powers on 5th April 1918. Signed a treaty with India 1950 after a long period of negotiations lasting three years, in which, India assumed responsibility for Sikkim's defence, external affairs, communications and other matters, but underlying Sikkim's "international personality". Cmsnd. as Pilot Officer, IAF, served in WW2 1940-1941. He was k. on active service at Peshawar, 20th December 1941.
  • 2) Sri Sri Sri Sri Sri Maharajkumar Chempo Palden Thondup Namgyal, who succeeded as H.H. Muwong Chogyal Sri Sri Sri Sri Sri Chempo Palden Thondup Namgyal [dPal-ldan Don-grub rNamgyal], Maharaja and Chogyal of Sikkim - see below.
  • 3) Prince (Gyalsey) Jigdal Tsewing Namgyal [Prince George Namgyal]. b. at the Royal Palace, Park Ridge, Gangtok, 23rd August 1928, educ. St Joseph's Coll., Northpoint, Darjeeling; Bishop Cotton Sch., Simla; St Stephen's Coll., Delhi; Bombay and Oxford Univs. m. and had issue, several sons and daughters, including:
    • a) Prince (Gyalsey) Jigme Namgyal, educ. St Joseph's Coll., Northpoint, and St Joseph's Acad., Darjeeling.
  • 1) Princess (Semla) Pema Tsedong Namgyal [Kuku La] [Pema Tsedong Yapshi-Phunkhang Lhacham Kusho]. b. at Darjeeling, 6th September 1924, educ. St Joseph's Convent, Kalimpong. Returned to Sikkim following the Red Chinese invasion of Tibet. m. at Lhasa, Tibet, October 1943, Gompu Tsering [mGon-po tshe-ring] Tendup [Sey Kusno] (d. before 1961), son of H.E. Sawang Phunkhang, sometime Minister of State in Tibet, of the family of the 12th Dalai Lama. She had issue, a daughter:

Teacher at Gangtok Girl's Sch. Mbr. General Cncl. of the Namgyal Inst. of Tibetology 1956-1969. m. (first) at Lhasa, Tibet, April 1950, Rinchen Tseden Namgyal [Sey Kushoe], son of Yapshi Yuthok Dzasa, sometime Tibetan State Trade Delegate at Kalimpong, of the family of the 8th Dalai Lama. m. (second) at Calcutta, 1967, Prithvi Raj Iyer, from a distinguished South Indian family. She d. at Calcutta, 12th January 1969, having had issue, three children.
  • 3) Princess (Semla) Sonam Palden Namgyal [Jean La] [Sonam Palden Trateng]. b. at the Royal Palace, Park Ridge, Gangtok, 22nd May 1927, educ. St Joseph's Convent, Kalimpong. m. at the Royal Chapel, Tsuk-La-Khang Monastery, Gangtok, summer 1962, Kazi Sonam Gyatso Trateng (d. 19xx), Personal Assist. & Interpreter to the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa 1959-1963. She d. 19xx, having had issue, a son:
    • a) H.E. Karma Gharwang Chochung Tenpa Namgyal Thinley Kunkhyab Pal Zangpo, 12th Zurmang Gharwang Rinpoche. b. at Gangtok, 30th June 1965, as Gharwang Tulku, educ. at Rumtek Monastery and the Nalanda Buddhist Inst. Installed on the Lion Throne, at Rumtek Monastery, 1976, as the reincarnated Zurmang Gharwang with the reign name Karma Gharwang Chochung Tenpa Namgyal Thinley Kunkhyab Pal Zangpo (Victorious protector of Buddha Dharma with excellent qualities and all-pervasive, auspicious activities).
