Maghey sakrati is one of the most important festivals of the Nepali Community, which as beein in existence for centuries. This festival is held in the second week of January. This is the day when the sun makes a transit from Dhan (capricon) and enters Makar (Sagittarious). Celebrated in the month of January, this festival marks the beginning of a warmer climate or the end of winder solstice and the beginning of the spring.
The Maghey sakrati may also be called an agricultural fair because of the fact that it denotes the cultivation season. In this regard, Maghey Sakrati also holds some resemblance with the pongal festival of the south India and the Lohri of Punjab as all these festivals are primarily related to agriculture. Important Maghey Mela(fair) is annually held at Jorethang, Sikkim during the 2nd week of January. How to Reach Jorethang Nearest Airport : Bagdogra: Bagdogra is well connected to Delhi, Kolkata and Guwahati by daily flights of various airlines. From there, jorethang is only 112 kms away by road. All kinds of vehicles are readily available. Nearest Train Station : New Jalpaiguri (NJP) The famus Darjeeling Mail from Seldah (Kolkata) and Rajdhani Express from Delhi/Guwahari besides other trains from all over the country operate on daily basis to Siliguri. From N.J.P Jorthang is only 103 Kms by road. Nearest City : Siliguri. Only 97 Kms, Jorthang is very well connected to Siliguri which is a terminal city. Buses and other private luxury vhicles are readily available from morning to Night. I've been following Jorethang Mela for quite sometime now!...but has lost its charm over the years!!...hoping to go this time also!!

while in jan,.there's a mela in every nook n corner in sikkim.. one better then the other,hehe.,,so dont get biased with jorthang mela only,. i never missed one whenever i visit,rongli,.east sikkim.
