Lharipa Ganden Lama
He is not only a foremost traditional Artist but also an indisputable authority on traditional Sikkimese handicraft, designs, motifs, frescoes, papier niache, wood carving etc. besides being a well-known Buddhist scholar. He was born on 10th January 1932 in Phodong, North Sikkirn. At the age of twelve Ganden Lama started his career as an artist in traditional arts. He underwent apprenticeship with one of the most renowned artists of that period Lharipa Rinzing Lama and over the years, gained considerable experience and expertise.
Lharipa Ganden Lama in the art of thanka painting in which he excelled. In 1955, he was appointed as a traditional Art Instructor in Enchey School. During 1956 he represented the State of Sikkirn at the International Handicraft Exhibitions held at Calcutta, Madras and Bombay and represented Sikkim at the World Crafts Conference at New Delhi in 1960. Nine years later Lharipa Ganden Lama became a Member of the World Crafts Council, Washington, USA. With the establishment of Government Institute of Cottage at Gangtok, Lharipa Ganden Lama was transferred from Enchey School to the Institute in 1957.
The small cottage industries which is now grown up to one of the most renowned repositories of the traditional arts and crafts of Sikkim was nurtured like a baby by this genius during his nearly four decades of service in the Institute. The credit for its development goes entirely to Lharipa Ganden Lama whose technical knowledge, exemplary devotion and the evangelic zest with which he used to carry out his duties and responsibilities made it possible. He was later promoted as Master Artist and continued to serve the Institute till his retirement from service on 30th December, 1992. He has still not lost his link with the Institute which constantly seeks his advice on all matters relating to the traditional arts and crafts of Sikkim.
In 1986, Lharipa Ganden Lama was conferred the National Award for Master Craftsman by the President of India. In 1987, the State Government awarded him with a Certificate for meritorious service followed by the State Award in 15th August, 1999 in recognition of his outstanding contributions in the field of traditional arts and crafts ofSikkirn. In 1997, he received the Krishna Smrity Award from the Sikkirn Sahitya Parishad. There is no second opinion that Lharipa Ganden Lama is the reigning monarch of traditional art of Sikkim and the masterpiece Thankas drawn by this simple, unassuming and soft-spoken but outstanding Artist have enriched a number of houses including those of Kings, Prime Ministers and common people alike.
Kazi Lhendup Dorjee
Kazi Lhendup Dorjee, commonly known as L.D.Kazi was born in Pakyong, East Sikkim in a Khangsarpa family in year 1904. Who later became the first Chief minister of state Sikkim, and died of heart attack in August 2007.
Jaslal Pradhan
Jaslal Pradhan was born on 24th April 1957, Son of Mr. Man Bahadur Pradhan of Khamdong, East Sikkim. After passing his matriculation (Class X) examination, he acquired the Army Graduation and Sports Diploma.
International Achievements
- His international achievements included:
- Gold medal in the IX Asian Boxing Championship at South Korea (Seoul) in 1982.
- A bronze medal in Mini Commonwealth Game at Australia (Brisbane) in 1981
- Participated in VIIIth Kings cup at Thailand, Bangkok in 1982,
- Participated in XI Asian Boxing championship at Japan (Okinawa) in 1993 and USSR international boxing.
National Achievements
- Gold medal in Junior National Boxing championship held at Hyderabad in 1975.
- Gold medal in Senior National Boxing Championship held at Tamil Nadu in 1976.
- Gold medal in Senior National Boxing Championship held at Jamshedpur in 1981.
- Gold medal in Senior National Boxing Championship held at Delhi, Bombay.
- Won double gold medals in Senior National Boxing Championship in 1981-83 and was even declared the Best Boxer of the country.
- In 1983, he was awarded the prestigious Arjuna Award.
Coaching Achievements

- Detailed as Coach 1st Uzbakistan Independence Cup 1993 held at Taskent (Uzbekistan).
- Detailed as Coach Seoul Cup International Boxing Championship 1995 held at South Korea (Seoul).
- Detailed as Coach for the Indian Team of YMCA 1st International Boxing Tournament 1995 held at New Delhi - his wards won four Gold Medal, Five Silver and Seven Bronze Medal.
- Detailed as Coach for the Training Camp 1994 Asian Game Boxer won Four Bronze Medal. 1994 World Cup Boxing Championship at Bangkok, Thailand - his wards won One Bronze Medal.
- 9th SAF Game 1995 held at Madras (India) participated as a Coach Boxer, his wards won 10 Gold Medal and 2 Silver Medal.
- Mayours Cup Boxing Championship 1996 held at Philipine CEBU CITY II Olympic Qualified Round - two boxers selected for Atlanta (USA)
Jaslal Pradhan is prsently serving as the State Coach (Boxing) and the difference he has made in this field in Sikkim can be most visible in the interest youngsters are showing in this discipline and the numerous medals they have been winning in different boxing championships in the country.
Jash Raj Subba
Mr. Jash Raj Subba, a post graduate in agricultural science from IARI, New Delhi, is a prolific writer and critic. Born in 1949 at Hee, on of the villages of Sikkim joined Agriculture service and has retired from Government Service in 2007 after 32 years as Principal Director Agriculture. During his long period of service he held a number of posts in the State government and has contributed a lot form the development of agriculture and horticulture. He has also worked as consultant to FAO, SARD-M project and is an expert on sustainable mountain farming systems.
Besides he has eighteen books in his credit on diverse subjects ranging from agriculture, horticulture, biodiversity, culture, anthropology, religion and philosophy, he has also contributed a number of articles and participated in seminars in the country and abroad.
Bhim Bahadur Pradhan
In 1925, after six years of hard work, he was promoted as the head of the Department of Forests, a position he occupied for 31 years, till his retirement in November 1956. He continued as Honorary Advisor on Floriculture to Government of Sikkim for several more years. His services were recognised both by the Government of India and the Government of Sikkim and he was honoured by the title of "Rai Saheb" in 1943 and "Pema Porjee" in 1965.
