GANGTOK, March 11: An awful incident of killing five Sikkimese Jawans of the Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) by their own colleague swarmed the entire state with shock and grief today. As the national television media aired the latest updates regularly, every house in Sikkim, who has their sons recruited in IRB, New Delhi kept a continuous vigil until the names of the deceased were declared. A stunning incident of killing five IRB Jawans became the national headlines in no time. The incident occurred at Dena Bank, Daryaganj, New Delhi in the wee hours of the morning.
Stating the incident as first of its kind and most alarming DIG (Range), Akshay Sachdeva calling a press conference here at the meeting hall of Police Head Quarter extended a condolence to the bereaved family on behalf of the Sikkim Police fraternity.
The five dead Jawans namely Lance Naik (LN) Vishal Tiwari, LN Karma Bhutia, LN Kumar Basnett, Constable Santabir Tamang and Constable Laxuman Subba were gunned down allegedly by the fellow gun man Nari Lepcha with SLR 7.62 rifle. Later Nari Lepcha and Jai Bahdahur Subba were arrested by police for interrogation.
According to Mr Sachdeva, Director General of Police C Ravindran, accompanied by DIG (SAP) Sridhar Rao and Hemraj Rai (Deputy Commandant) rushed for New Delhi, today morning. Informing that the entire investigation shall be carried out by Delhi Police Sachdeva added, the dead bodies of the Jawans will be brought possibly on 13 March after completing the prior formalities.
Coming in strong criticism against the act, he informed altogether 5 companies are running under IRB with 741 recruited Jawans in New Delhi and NHPC, Balutar. ‘It is an isolated stray incident’ he added. He also stated that the work pressure could not be at all the reason behind the incident as the IRB Jawans have 42 days earn leave and 20 days casual leave.
Later talking with Sikkim Express over the phone, DIG (Range) informed about the latest development in the case. It was informed that Nari Tshering Lepcha confessed to the crime. As per his confession statement the harsh sexual harassment by his colleague Vishal Tewrai led him to take such a ruthless step.
